Tanabe has a few to recommend to guests staying a night near Kii-Tanabe Station or having time before the next bus departs for the Kumano Kodo.
Try “mitarashi dango” (sticky, chewy rice flour dumplings in sweet soy sauce) from Kasho Ninomiya near the entrance of Tokei-jinja shrine.
Or indulge in a “Deluxe Cake” from Suzuya, just 200 meters from the station.
Or visit perhaps the oldest confectionery shop in Tanabe, Tsuji-no-mochi to try their unique “Okeshi Mochi” rice cakes topped with red sweet beans!
Each of these shops has close to 100 years of history or more in the area! But there are more delicacies, confectionery, restaurants and otherwise to explore when you get here.
